The origin of the concept of the Maithriya Buddha is not known. But it can be decided that it would have been originated from the incident where Gauthama Buddha declares the next Buddha namely Mithriya Bosath. From the very ancient times till the Kandyan era , kings of Lanka built the statues of Maithriya Bosath and followed the custom of worshipping Maithriya Bosath. They knew who this Maithriya Bosath is. A sataue of King Dutuganunu was built next tot he statue of Maithriya Bosath.
